The Douglas County Fair is in need of volunteer building attendants to ensure the safety of 4-H and FFA projects during this year's fair. 4-H and FFA programs teach leadership, citizenship, and life skills through projects that are showcased at the fair. Assistance is needed for the following times: Wednesday August 4 and Thursday August 5, 8-10 p.m.; Friday, August 6, 6-8 p.m.; and Saturday August 7, 4-6 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. If interested, please contact Margaret Kalb at 843-7058 or mkalb2@ksu.edu .
Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice is seeking Hospice Patient Volunteers: Work directly with patients and their families by providing companionship, respite care, and/or relief for primary caregiver in home placements or care facilities. Volunteers must commit to one year of service and be available for regular once weekly assignments from 2-4 hrs. Volunteers need to be reliable, caring, open-minded, and good listeners. Just Food of ECKAN needs regular volunteers anytime Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm. Volunteers typically work shifts that are two-four hours long, but that is at the volunteers discretion. If you would like to volunteer please contact cward@eckan.org or call 856-7030.
The Salvation Army at 946 New Hampshire is in need of volunteers Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, for our feeding program. We need volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean. We are open from 8:30am until 4:30pm. Volunteers are welcome for any time that they can give. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for volunteer community mentors, age 18 and up with a valid driver’s license. They currently have 65 children waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. The commitment is for one year and includes contact 2-3 hours a week for 3-4 weeks each month. The application process usually takes three to four weeks. For more information about becoming a volunteer mentor please attend an orientation meeting on Tuesdays at 5:15pm or Wednesdays at noon or contact the agency at 843-7359.
The State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program will be providing training for persons interested in becoming a LTC Ombudsman Volunteer. The training will be held at the Kansas Advocates for Better Care office located @ 913 Tennessee, Suite 2, beginning on July 26th. We will train each Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00pm for four weeks followed by facility tours and facility placement. Our mission is to advocate for the well being, safety, and rights of residents of Kansas Long-Term care facilities by assisting them in attaining the highest possible quality of life. The Willow Domestic Violence Center is in need of assistance with weeding and caring for the grounds surrounding their new administrative offices. If you have a little gardening experience, and would like to spend a few hours outdoors helping at an agency that advocates for and supports survivors of domestic violence, please contact Nijah at 331-2034 or nfudge@willowdvcenter.org.
Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community , 4851 Harvard, is seeking volunteers for several activities. This is a great activity for teens and/or families to do together. No experience is necessary. Lawrence Meals on Wheels is in need of “regular” volunteers who commit to a route once a week and “substitute” volunteers who can fill in on routes when needed. Routes are available M-F. They start at LMH at 11:20am and take about an hour. There are seven open routes right now and also eight clients on a waiting list to receive services. They cannot do it without more dedicated volunteers! Please contact Kim Culliss at 830-8844 to get involved.
